Janken-pon: The 2012 International Rock Paper Scissors Championships

Looking back at the 2012 International Rock Paper Scissors Championships in London.

We competed in the International Rock Paper Scissors Championships in London 14 years ago this week. How time flies!

Competitive Rock Paper Scissors draws a crowd!

We teamed up with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and author Dave Barry and his daughter Sophie from the USA to take part in the huge event.

The San Marino Rock Paper Scissors team

More than 150 athletes from 16 teams competed in the Wacky Nation organised tournament held at the Knight’s Templar Pub on Chancery Lane in London on Thursday 9th August 2012.

As we couldn’t play as a combined 'UK-USA' team we decided to represent the plucky nation of San Marino instead.

Prior to the start of the competition I challenged football hard man Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock to a 'friendly' Rock Paper Scissors contest to warm-up.

Needless to say I won the shootout! It was an ill-tempered clash with plenty of foul language and gamesmanship. The heated battle almost resulted in a knock-out punch too!

International Rock Paper Scissors

Matches in the Round Robin stage of the main-event were played in a ‘first to four points’ format with each player in the team taking it in turns to win a point by competing in a ‘best of three’ Rock Paper Scissors game. Our team managed to rack up a win-loss record of won four, lost one.

Before any teams could advance from our pool a play-off was required as Austria and the Lapland 'A' team had also finished with four wins and one loss!

Thankfully our team was able to win both matches to advance alongside Lapland 'A', with the Austrians sent home.

The first semi-final saw San Marino take on the Vatican City team in a ‘first to six points’ match.

Unfortunately we lost and were therefore unable to go for gold.

Sadly we just missed out on the podium, suffering defeat to Great Britain in the repechage to ultimately finish in fourth place.

The final was a battle between the might of Lapland 'A' and the Vatican City, with the Laplanders finishing on top and grabbing the gold medal.

Competitive Rock Paper Scissors

Getting to the semi-finals of the International Rock Paper Scissors Championships was the furthest I have ever reached in an RPS tournament (so far), having been knocked out in the preliminary rounds of national competitions held in 2010 and 2011.

The newly rebuilt Safari Adventure Golf course at York Gardens in Dawlish is now open.

Miniature Golf at York Gardens in Dawlish

The Safari Adventure Golf course is the latest layout to sit on the site in York Gardens.

Prior to the new Safari Adventure Golf, its predecessor - also a Safari Adventure Golf course - opened in 2018 and replaced a Swedish Felt Mini Golf course that had been in the location since the 1990s.

I've got several old postcards dating from the 1930's and 1940's through to the 1970's and 1980's that show a grass Putting course on the spot. When we visited in 2015 we were pleased to see some postcards showing the Swedish Felt Minigolf course on sale in the town and I bought a stack of them from the Tourist Information Centre to post out to friends.

Stockport Krazy Races 2026

The Stockport Krazy Races 2026 took place on Sunday 9th August.

The Krazy Races soapbox derby returned to Stockport for an action packed day of street racing on Sunday 9th August.

The Stockport Krazy Races saw 27 teams tackle a track from St Petersgate, down Mersey Square and over the finish line on Chestergate.

We had a nice afternoon at event. What a turnout, the town was packed. A fun atmosphere and plenty of good viewing spots.

The new adventure mini-golf course at Basset Down Complex in Swindon is a Wiltshire-themed 18-hole outdoor adventure golf layout.

A Bee Network branded Northern Class 323 train (323239) at Cheadle Hulme railway station in Greater Manchester on Thursday 6th August 2026.

This was the delayed 13:46 service from Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly.

The train had arrived at Cheadle Hulme at 14:20 ready for a 14:21 departure, but was delayed until 14:55.

I've only seen the Bee Network livery on this train at a station once before, at Stockport in April this year.

The Brewmaster's Open minigolf tournament at the Camden Town Brewery in London

Playing crazy golf in a brewery!

The Brewmaster's Open minigolf tournament took place at the Camden Town Brewery in London on this day in 2012.

We competed in The Brewmaster's Open at the Camden Town Brewery 14 years ago today. It was part of the brilliant summer of sport in the capital.

Alan 'Stormin' Norman won The Brewmaster's Open with his round of 8. I finished in tied 2nd place alongside Seth Thomas.

A lost minigolf course - Pirate Crazy Golf at Pontins Camber Sands Holiday Park

A look at the Pirate Crazy Golf course at Pontins Camber Sands Holiday Park in East Sussex.

Last week I asked the question "Where in the world was this minigolf course visited on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour?".

The answer was the Pirate Crazy Golf course at Pontins Camber Sands Holiday Park in Camber Sands, East Sussex.

The Pirate Crazy Golf course at Pontins Camber Sands became the 585th visited and 351st course played on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour when we swung by for a round in October 2014.

Pontins Camber Sands Holiday Park closed in 2023 so the course is not accessible.

A look at the medieval-themed adventure golf course at Namco Funscape in Tamworth back in 2017.

This was the medieval-themed adventure golf course at Namco Funscape in Tamworth, Staffordshire.

We played the course on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour in September 2017.

We haven't seen many medieval-themed courses on our travels.

Interestingly the course was half indoors and half outdoors - not something we've seen all that often either. Some of the outdoor holes were also under shelter.

There's a Baseball-themed minigolf hole on the Crazier Golf course at Boom Battle Bar in Leeds.

Boom Battle Bar in Leeds is home to an indoor 9-hole crazier golf course.

One of the holes is baseball-themed and you tee-off with a baseball bat rather than a putter.

The Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre in Stockport

A look at The Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

The Plaza opened in 1932.

It has had closures over the years, but has been open fully since 2009 and is still going strong.

It's well worth a visit and there are regular theatre shows, pantos, comedy performances and more.

We've also watched some excellent new and classic films on the big screen there.

To watch a film or show there is a superb experience from start to finish - with much more to it than your average multiplex.

The Plaza's original Compton theatre organ is still in situ, and rises out of the floor before performances and during intervals.
