When in Blackpool...
...you've got to have a snap with a hot dog man! |
A blog about our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour. With a sprinkling of nostalgia and urban exploration for good measure.
The course was a Merlin Adventure Golf venue for a time |

The postcard is likely to be from the late 1970s |
This old postcard showing the Putting Green at the North Shore in Blackpool was posted on the 10th of October 1938.
This old minigolf postcard by Photo Precision Limited shows the South Shore Baths and Promenade in Blackpool.
I'd say the prominent feature on the card is the crazy golf course in the foreground |
It was posted on the 17th September 1980. A month before I was born.
Last year I had my family's cinefilm converted and was amazed to see my parents playing crazy golf in Blackpool in August 1980. That round was on the course at Princess Parade on the North Shore.
The South Shore Crazy Golf course was located right outside the Pleasure Beach. It was removed in 2008 and replaced by an Adventure Golf layout. I won the Pleasure Beach Open tournament on that course in 2009.
We've just started watching Stranger Things on Netflix and it reminded me that we saw the remains of the Strangest Things attraction in Blackpool earlier this year.
The online reviews for the experience are quite something!
We had a walk round Chorley town centre back in August and spotted a Steals shop for the first time. The brand has some nice signage.
Looking online I found that Steals is a bargain clothes shop with branches in Blackpool, Preston, Accrington, Poulton-le-Fylde and Chorley.
We were in Blackpool in September and saw the Steals there.
We visited Blackpool for the first time this year on the 3rd September. It was really nice to get back to the seaside.

While there we had a catch-up with Ian and Paul from the Blackpool Fulfilling Lives and Blackpool and the Fylde Street Angels - the two groups that have joined forces to refresh and reopen the Princess Parade Crazy Golf course on Blackpool's North Shore.
It was brilliant to talk to people in real life for a change! |
It's a pleasure to be a part of the Princess Parade Crazy Golf project and I've enjoyed working with the teams at Blackpool Fulfilling Lives and Blackpool & the Fylde Street Angels, Blackpool Council and the Blackpool Civic Trust to get the course reopened.
The area has been given a massive clean up by the project team and a number of the holes have required repairs. You can see how the course looked in May 2019 and October 2019 in my blog post.

The Princess Parade Crazy Golf course will be opening next year once the refurbishment work is complete and it is safe to do so.

We've recently found out that the course has been there since the late 1950s. We've got quite quite a few old postcards showing the course. It's lovely to see the photos of it in its heyday and it'll be brilliant to be down there on a hot, sunny day in the future.
