Reopening the abandoned North Shore course

Blackpool and the Fylde Street Angels and Blackpool Fulfilling Lives joined forces to refresh and reopen the Princess Parade Crazy Golf course on Blackpool's North Shore in 2019 and a number of other people and groups have been a part of the project. Including me.

The base of the course itself has changed very little since it was first created in the late 1950's and it's wonderful that the area is easily recognisable from old postcards from the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

There have still been some very noticeable improvements to the course and the whole area it sits in. Most notable are the repairs to the obstacles as well as the addition of professional putting carpet to the holes. It makes the course very nice to play.

More information can be found in my blog post from the launch event in May 2021, in one of my previous posts charting the progress on the refurbishment and this blog post from September 2020.

We've been to the course a number of times on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour over the years but it had always been closed. That was until Blackpool and the Fylde Street Angels and Blackpool Fulfilling Lives joined forces to refresh and reopen the Princess Parade Crazy Golf course on Blackpool's North Shore in 2019 and a number of other people and groups have been a part of the project.

Crazy Golfing at Princess Parade in Blackpool

Playing the Princess Parade Crazy Golf course in Blackpool.

I was recently back in Blackpool and swung by the Princess Parade Crazy Golf course. Luckily I was just in time for a round on the 18-hole course.

It was the first time I've had a game on the fully refurbished layout and it was a delight.

The course was created in the 1950's but had been in a state of disrepair for the last twenty years.

It now plays like a dream. I can't wait to get back for a few more goes on it.

Take a look at the photos of the front and back nine holes below.

I shot a round of 36 - with one hole-in-one and a dropped shot (on the 18th). The course record stands at 34, which is a very good score indeed.

Princess Parade Crazy Golf in Blackpool

Work is nearing completion at the Princess Parade Crazy Golf course on Blackpool's North Shore.

I was in Blackpool two years ago today where I first met with colleagues on the project team working to refresh and reopen the Crazy Golf course on Princess Parade in the seaside resort.

The minigolf layout has undergone a lot of improvement work to get it up to scratch and it is planned that the course will be open to the public for the first time in many years later this summer.

The activity has helped homeless and disadvantaged people in Blackpool by giving them the chance to work on the Crazy Golf course so it is playable and the opportunity to continue by staffing the site for the season. It's a brilliant plan to give people work experience, while also bringing a disused minigolf course attraction and asset to the town back to life.

We're really looking forward to seeing the course open again and having a game there on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour as I haven't played it since I was a kid. Our first visit to the course on our tour was in 2009 and it wasn't open then.

A visit to the Princess Parade Crazy Golf course in Blackpool.

Princess Parade Crazy Golf in Blackpool, September 2020

We visited Blackpool for the first time this year on the 3rd September. It was really nice to get back to the seaside.

While there we had a catch-up with Ian and Paul from the Blackpool Fulfilling Lives and Blackpool and the Fylde Street Angels - the two groups that have joined forces to refresh and reopen the Princess Parade Crazy Golf course on Blackpool's North Shore.

The area has been given a massive clean up by the project team and a number of the holes have required repairs. You can see how the course looked in May 2019 and October 2019 in my blog post.

Seaside heritage and Blackpool minigolf history

We've recently found out that the course has been there since the late 1950s. We've got quite quite a few old postcards showing the course. It's lovely to see the photos of it in its heyday and it'll be brilliant to be down there on a hot, sunny day in the future.

Princess Parade Crazy Golf in Blackpool, May 2019

I was in Blackpool a year ago today!

I visited the seaside resort to meet with the teams at Blackpool Fulfilling Lives and Blackpool and the Fylde Street Angels.

The two groups have joined forces to refresh and reopen the Princess Parade Crazy Golf course on Blackpool's North Shore.

The course has now received the green light from Blackpool Council and will be opening once the refurbishment work is complete and it is safe to do so.

The course will retain as many of the original obstacles as possible, with repairs made to damaged elements.

It's a pleasure to be a part of the Princess Parade Crazy Golf project and I've enjoyed working with the teams at Blackpool Fulfilling Lives and Blackpool & the Fylde Street Angels, Blackpool Council and the Blackpool Civic Trust.

More information on the project can be found on the Blackpool Princess Parade Crazy Golf Facebook Group and via Blackpool Fulfilling Lives and Blackpool and the Fylde Street Angels.

The area has been given a massive clean up by the project team. This is how the course looked in October last year.
