Report from the Second Knowley Grail Minigolf Tournament

Results and report from the second Knowley Grail Minigolf Competition.

The second edition of the Knowley Grail was contested between thirteen BMGA Tour Pro players following the first day's play of the BMGA British Open at Strokes Adventure Golf in Margate, Kent.

The rules of the Knowley Grail dictate that all players use the same Minigolf ball - a 'Pinky Diver' - and any player scoring a seven is automatically eliminated from the rest of the one-round competition.

With two balls available the group of thirteen split into two groups and commenced play. Defending champion Brad 'The Fist' Shepherd was in group one and along with players including Seth Thomas and Will Donnelly set an early pace rattling in the holes-in-one.

The first player to be eliminated was 'Oh' Chris Jones who was unable to get the super bouncy ball to stay at the top of the ramp at hole three and so was relegated to a 'plastic garden chair of shame' for the rest of the round.

No other players were eliminated from the tournament until Paul 'Johnson Paul Johnson Don't Call Me Sue Thompson' Johnson scored a seven at the 11th hole - the aptly named "Heartbreak Ridge". The hole would also claim Scott 'Donkey Gringo' Lancley as another victim and both would join 'Oh' Chris Jones on the lawnchairs of shame.

At the end of the 18-hole round there was a tie for first place, with James 'The Rocket' Rutherford and Adam 'AK47' Kelly both scoring rounds of 38(+2). A sudden-death play-off commenced and The Rocket scored a hole-in-one, while AK47 was unable to respond with an Ace, meaning that the new Knowley Grail champion was James Rutherford.

Results of the second Knowley Grail competition:

2. Adam Kelly - 38
3. Ted McIver - 41
4. Michael Smith - 42
5. Brad Shepherd - 43
5. Will Donnelly - 43
7. Richard Gottfried - 47
8. Seth Thomas - 48
8. Alan Norman - 48
10. Gareth Holmes - 51
DNF Scott Lancley - scored a 7 at hole 11
DNF Paul Johnson - scored a 7 at hole 11
DNF Chris Jones - scored a 7 at hole 3

The Knowley Grail minigolf competition was created by members of the London Minigolf Club following the Midlands Open tournament held at the 12-hole Minigolf course at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge, Solihull. The LMGC members had spent the Friday perusing the charity shops of nearby Knowle and found a silver chalice on sale for £2.50. This became the trophy for the Knowley Grail tournaments.

Bar Billiards and other pub games at the East Kent in Whitstable

Pool, Bar Billiards and Table Football at pubs in Whitstable and Tankerton-on-Sea.

Last Thursday Emily and I visited the lovely seaside town of Whitstable in Kent. Next to our B&B on Oxford Road was the East Kent pub, which advertised itself as having the best beer garden in the town. We didn't get as far as the garden as we spotted a Pool table (with Free Play on a Thursday) and a room with a Bar Billiards table and a very old Table Football!

The East Kent had a pub dog that was keen for customers to play with it, along with a squawking Parrot next to the bar and the Bar Billiards table!

Our Pool competiton began at The Royal in Tankerton-on-Sea, another nice pub that is worth a visit, and saw me take a 2-nil lead in our first-to-three competition. In the first game at the East Kent Emily took the win to force another game. I won that one to win 3-1.

In our Bar Billards match I was victorious 1,050-nil after Emily wiped out her total of 190 by knocking down the black peg.

The final game in our pub games series was on the brilliant old Table Football machine. The table was in great condition and it was far superior to modern machines. I won the game 6-3 in a match that lasted a good 20 minutes! One of the attempts on goal took about 5 minutes!

The East Kent is a great pub. It's nice and friendly with lots to do (there are two dart boards as well) and a good selection of drinks. I could easily spend a day in there.

An old Putting Course in Westbrook, Margate

Finding another unplayable Miniature Golf course on my travels.

Having completed our sixth and final round of the 2012 BMGA British Open minigolf championship at the 18-hole Strokes Adventure Golf course on Westbrook Promenade in Margate, Kent, my fellow BMGA Tour Pro players John 'Big Al' Moore, Gareth 'Something for the Ladies' Holmes and I went for a wander to the nearest shops to get some food for a picnic in the lovely torrential rain conditions that had hampered the second and final days play of the British Open.

After walking along the seafront we headed up to the main road and crossed a patch of grassland at Westbrook Bowls Club that looked suspiciously like an old Minigolf Putting Course. And it was!

At the old Putting Course at Westbrook Bowls Club

Matt Wood from the excellent Strokes Adventure Golf course confirmed that it used to be a Putting Green and that he used to play there as a kid.

You could still make out some of the raised greens and hillocks on the course.

A shame its not still open. But if you are in Margate then you can always have a round at Strokes.

The course was the 203rd unplayed course on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour and the 509th visit overall!

On Friday 21st September Richard scored a round of 41(+5) to finish alongside Alex Pragnell and John Moore in a tie for 12th place of 21 players in the BMGA Players Championship. Michael Smith won the title for the second year running in the traditional warm-up tournament to the BMGA British Open.

In the BMGA British Open Team Championship contested amongst Clubs Richard and his two Midlands Minigolf Club teammates Paul Johnson and John Moore finished in 7th place in the contest.

Richard said “I’m fairly disappointed with my play in the British Open as I know I can do a lot better on the course. I didn’t have any total nightmare holes, but just dropped too many shots on some of the easier holes. Strokes Adventure Golf course is one of the best in the UK and a real test, I’ll be back to take on the challenge again next year and hope to hit some much better rounds.”

Tropical Margate

Who would have thought that Banana's grow on trees in Margate?

While in the "tropical" English seaside resort of Margate, Kent for the 2012 BMGA British Open minigolf tournament I spotted a Banana growing on the tree by hole one at the 18-hole Strokes Adventure Golf course!

Greenfingered German Minigolfer, and former BMGA British Open champion, Karsten Hein planted the seeds for its growth back in 2009 and has been helping to cultivate the crop. He was happy to harvest the Banana at the end of practice on Friday.

Happy Miniature Golf Day 2012!

Wishing everyone all the best on this most wonderful day.

Whatever you call the great game of Miniature Golf and wherever you are in the world I hope you have a brilliant Miniature Golf Day 2012!

As ever, according to the Holiday Insights website, the 21st of September is Miniature Golf Day.

If you're looking for a Minigolf course to play then the list of courses at MiniatureGolfer.com is a great place to start. Pretty much every course in the world is listed on the site, with more added as they are 'discovered'!

On our travels Emily and I have visited and played a great many courses (and a fair few closed, abandoned and derelict ones) and you can check out those we've been to on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour list.

If you fancy taking up the game 'professionally' and are in the UK then do have a look at the British Minigolf Association - you can join for FREE. Do also check out the BMGA on Facebook and Twitter. There is also a World Minigolf Sport Federation which has member associations all over the world.

If you're in the USA, or looking to visit, then you must check out The Putting Penguin. There are stacks of course reviews of Minigolf courses, along with details of upcoming tournaments.

If you don't get a chance to do anything Minigolf-ey this Miniature Golf Day then don't worry. The next one will be on Saturday 11th May 2013! There is also a Minigolf Tag (Minigolf Day) in Austria each year. It's also in May.

While looking around for Miniature Golf Day related information online I found out about the 'Mini Golf Day and Crab Feast 2012'. It's a charity Minigolf tournament raising funds for The Ed Block Courage Award Foundation and taking place at ParTee Golf in Baltimore, Maryland, USA on Saturday 29th September 2012!

And remember - Miniature Golf Day is ALWAYS on the 21st September, so next year it'll be on a Saturday.

A Miniature Golf course at the Smallest Pub on the Planet

New Minigolf course installed at The Signal Box Inn, Cleethorpes.

In May 2011 Emily and I went on a tour of the Lincolnshire coast and the first stop off was in Cleethorpes. While we were there we managed to play two courses - a Crazy Golf and an indoor Adventure Golf. We also found a great pub called The Signal Box Inn, which just happened to be the smallest pub on the planet!

While there we sampled some of the cider and had a great chat with the landlord Alan Cowood. Telling him about our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour and our love of pub games he showed us the 'Games Room' at the pub. Following our visit I sent Alan a 9-hole Miniature Golf course to add to the pub's entertainment options and I've now received photos of the course's installation.

Due to the Minigolf course's portable nature it is able to be moved around the venue and with nine tricky Crazy Golf holes to master will be sure to entertain patrons of the pub.

If you visit The Signal Box Inn and have a game of Miniature Golf do let me know your scores by leaving a comment on this blog post.

The Signal Box Inn is located at Lakeside Station on the Cleethorpes Light Railway and is open 11am to 11pm Tuesday to Sunday.

Allan Cox's Charity Putt Putt World Record Attempt - 570 Minigolf Holes-in-One!

Putt Putt Champion to attempt a Minigolf Hole-in-One World Record in Australia!

On Sunday 16th September 2012 Allan 'The Putter King' Cox will attempt (and no doubt succeed) in a World Record of scoring 570 holes-in-one in Minigolf/Putt Putt Miniature Golf!

The World Record is a fundraiser for Allan's five-year-old nephew Chaise Edenborough who has soft tissue cancer and type-one diabetes. The target is to raise $5000 for the Oncology Department at the Westmead Children's Hospital, Parramatta, near Sydney, Australia.

The World Record Attempt will be played at the Putt Putt Ermington Miniature Golf course in West Ryde, Australia.

All the best to Allan in his attempt. I have no doubt that he'll be able to break the World Record. He is after all a five-team Australian Putt Putt Champion and the reigning Putter King!

To donate to the cause please check out the Chaising Aces Facebook Page.

The Knowley Grail of Minigolf

Competing for a new Minigolf trophy.

Following the 2012 Midlands Open Minigolf Tournament at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge twelve BMGA Tour Professionals competed for a brand new Miniature Golf title and trophy in The Knowley Grail!

With the London Minigolf Club members having spent the Friday perusing the charity shops of nearby Knowle they had happened across a silver chalice on sale for £2.50. With players always eager to compete in side-competitions the trophy and a prize pot of £9.50 was up for grabs in a one-round shootout between the competitors.

There were a few specials rules in The Knowley Grail contest. Firstly, all players would use one type of ball – a “Pinky Diver” – and secondly, any player scoring a maximum of seven shots on any hole would be eliminated from the contest. With the Pinky Diver having an unprecedented amount of bounce on it the casualty rate was expected to be high!

However, despite Brad ‘The Fist’ Shepherd’s best efforts to jinx players it wasn’t until the 11th hole that play crumbled. In fact up until that point many of the competitors had actually scored better than they had in the Midlands Open!

Brad 'The Fist' Shepherd hoping for a 7 from Sethers

With the lead group of Brad, me, Seth and Chris Jones completing the round unscathed and with Brad holding the clubhouse lead with a score of 22(-2), and a new personal best for him at Dorridge, we were able to settle down to watch the remaining eight players take on the last two holes.

Alan 'Stormin' Norman lining-up a shot

The first player to crumble was Alan ‘Stormin’ Norman. The Brewmaster’s Open Champion managed to get the ball through the pipe but was unable to sink the putt when on the green and so was sent/dragged to a chair of shame.

Alan 'Stormin' Norman being dragged off the course by Brad

With ‘Stormin’ able to relax the wait was on to see if anyone else would hit a dreaded seven. We didn’t have to wait long as Ruth Burke was also unable to complete the hole and was therefore out of the chase for The Knowley Grail.

The other players were able to hole out on the eleventh, but no one was able to score as low as Brad’s 22(-2). The runner-up was Scott ‘Donkey Gringo’ Lancley with a 26(+2) followed by five players who couldn’t be bothered to have a sudden-death play-off tied for third-place!

Brad 'The Fist' Shepherd receives his winnings and The Knowley Grail from teammate 'Oh' Chris Jones

The Knowley Grail Champion - Brad 'The Fist' Shepherd

The final results of the inaugural Knowley Grail competition were:
1. Brad Shepherd – 22
2. Scott Lancley – 26
3. Seth Thomas – 27
3. Richard Gottfried – 27
3. Chris Jones – 27
3. Owen Johnson – 27
3. Sean Homer – 27
8. Paul Johnson – 29
9. Steve Sturdy – 32
9. Gareth Holmes – 32
DNF – Alan Norman
DNF – Ruth Burke

There is talk of The Knowley Grail being a regularly contested title. It’ll probably go the way of the League of Mediocrity and the Scrap Iron Cup and become an irregularly contested event.

Howard the Celeriac and the Special Steak

The excellent "Coeliac Cartoonist"(!) Howard the Celeriac has depicted a kind of amusing experience I had while dining out with friends following a Minigolf tournament!

You can check out the cartoon 'Special Steak' over on the Howard the Celeriac website.

Many thanks to my mate Brad 'The Fist' Shepherd - he's the Brussels Sprout - for creating the scene for me last year in Bristol. The git.

Minigolf Report – Midlands Open & BMGA British Doubles Championships

Luton Minigolfer Richard Gottfried was in action over the weekend as he competed in two tournaments at the 12-hole Minigolf Course at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge, Solihull.

Midlands Open

First up was the Midlands Open competition held on Saturday 8th September.

Richard finished in tied tenth place in the 34-player field with a score of 94(-2) following rounds of 22, 23, 26 and 23. The four-round competition was won by the reigning World Crazy Golf Champion, Oxford’s Michael Smith with a score of 78(-18).

BMGA British Doubles Championships

The 2012 BMGA British Doubles Championships were held on Sunday 9th September. Richard teamed with Margate’s Scott Lancley for the second year in a row. The team finished in seventh place overall in the 16-team competition.

Commenting on the weekend’s events Richard said “The Minigolf course at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge is one of my favourite courses and always presents a great challenge. I’m pleased with achieving another pair of top ten finishes on the BMGA Tour in two very competitive fields. It was a pleasure to once again team with Scott Lancley in our attempt to win the British Doubles, unfortunately we lost our quarter final match against the eventual champions, but we’ll have another crack at the titles next year.”

In the BMGA British Doubles Championships each of the competing 16 teams played in a round robin group qualifying stage, before moving on to a knockout stage to determine the final rankings.

Richard and Scott were second in their group with two wins and a draw, after defeating Marina Breeden and Adam Breeden, Alex Pragnell and Alastair Shaw and tying with Michael Smith and James Rutherford. This meant they qualified for the play-off matches for positions 1-8.

In the quarter final match against Ted McIver and Nick Chitty they were handed their first loss and entered the pool for positions 5-8. McIver and Chitty were the eventual champions, defeating the duo of Seth Thomas and Chris Smith in the final. Gottfried and Lancley lost their next classification match against Marion Homer and Sean Homer, but were victorious in their match against Oliver Florence and Richard Skeggs in the play-off for 7th/8th place.

The immaculately turned out players of Team Sqonkey at the 2012 BMGA British Doubles Championships

The Gottfried & Lancley team finished the BMGA British Doubles Championships with a win/loss record of three wins, one draw and two defeats. The team’s career record stands at seven wins, one draw and five losses in thirteen matches on the British Minigolf Association Tour.

Playing Crazee Golf at the Tintype Art Gallery in London

Visiting the Tintype Contemporary Art Gallery and playing a very crazy Minigolf hole at the Crazee Golf Art Exhibition.

On Thursday 6th September the latest stop on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour saw us head to the Tintype Art Gallery in Hatton Garden in London for the Private Viewing Opening Night of the new ‘Crazee Golf’ exhibition.

The idea of the exhibition was to get 18 artists to design and create their own Crazy Golf ‘holes’. The result is a wide-range of wacky, odd, strange and intriguing pieces of art. The exhibition is not a Crazy Golf course as such, but it was certainly interesting to see some other points of view of Crazy Golf!

One of the designs has three copies of the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey laid (splayed!) out as a Minigolf Putting course, another is a short film, others are a series of sketches and one is a series of photos of a derelict Crazy Golf course in Bournemouth. It’s one we’ve visited on the Crazy World of Minigolf Tour and I recognised it straight away!

Artist Joby Williamson created a Crazee Golf challenge hole called ‘dancefloor yips’ and offers visitors the chance to hit a ball through the air, towards a hole in the top right hand corner of a window and onto a makeshift green on the roof below! Me and my Minigolf Doubles teammate Kevin ‘Max’ Moseley both had a go, but neither of us managed to Ace it. I don’t think anyone managed a hole-in-one – it’s very tricky indeed!

Up on the roof - The 'green' of the playable Crazee Golf hole at the Tintype Gallery

The exhibition is curated by Oona Grimes & Teresa Grimes and is open to the public from the 7th September until the 27th October 2012. I’ll be heading back to give the ‘dancefloor yips’ challenge hole another play.

You can view the Crazee Golf exhibition and photos of the designs on the Tintype Gallery website too.

Crazee Golf Art Exhibition to Open at the Tintype Gallery in London!

The Tintype Contemporary Art Gallery in London has a new upcoming exhibition entitled “CRAZEE GOLF"!

The Crazee Golf exhibition is the result of 18 artists work to create their own Crazy Golf designs. You can visit the exhibition, curated Oona Grimes & Teresa Grimes, from the 7th September until the 27th October 2012.

As an avid Miniature Golfer and Crazy Golf Champion I’m really looking forward to visiting the exhibition (and playing on the displays...)!

Results of the Scrap Iron Cup Minigolf Tournament in Newport, Wales

Luton’s Richard Gottfried defeats Cwmbran’s Cindy Kukielka to win fifth Scrap Iron Cup title at competition played at Newport’s Tredegar Park Crazy Golf course.

A nice sign to see - the Crazy Golf course at Newport's Tredegar Park has re-opened for 2012

On Saturday 26th August the Scrap Iron Cup Minigolf Trophy and Title was contested between members of the Midlands Minigolf Club and a lone guest member from the Splash Point Mini Golf Club at the newly re-opened 9-hole Crazy Golf course at Tredegar Park in Newport, Wales.

'Squire' Richard Gottfried plays the first hole of the Tredegar Park Crazy Golf course in Newport, Wales

Seven players lined-up in the contest that for 2012 replaced the annual Cystadleuaeth Minigolff Cymraeg (Welsh Minigolf Tournament). Reigning and defending two-time Scrap Iron Cup champion Owen ‘Jackpot’ Johnson decided that the competition would be played in a one-round shootout format to decide the winner.

The three players who had held the Cystadleuaeth Minigolff Cymraeg title teed-off in group one, with Cindy and Emily, and Owen and Paul in the other groups. Jas took an early lead, but was pegged back by Owen and all was looking good for a decisive winner of the contest. That was until hole 9!

The agonising wait to see if the ball will drop in the hole on the 9th at Tredegar Park

At the end of the round there was a six-way tie for the lead after the majority of the field scored a round of 23(+5). The 9th hole at Tredegar Park is a killer hole and it certainly proved a round and contest killer for Leo ‘Leonard’ Kukielka who was unable to hole out and therefore was unable to qualify for the play-off.

The players putt away on the 9-hole Tredegar Park Crazy Golf course in Newport, Wales

The sudden-death play-off commenced and saw the players play holes chosen by the course manager, with hole 1, hole 6, hole 7 and finally hole 3 played to decide the winner. At the final hole Welsh Ladies Number One Cindy Kukielka scored a three and Richard Gottfried scored a hole-in-one to take the win in a rematch of the final of the fourth Scrap Iron Cup.
