Judging the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club PUTT PARTY contest

We had a brilliant time judging all of the entries into the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club's PUTT PARTY contest on Saturday morning.

Putting at home with the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club
Putting at home with the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club

The PUTT PARTY was a Show & Tell of the Mini Golf holes created by residents of Knowle West in Bristol and the culmination of a lot of hard work and crazy golfing fun.

During lockdown and over summer the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club has created a home-based minigolf club for local residents. Having received supplies of arts and crafts materials the club members were challenged to create their own crazy golf holes.

It was superb seeing the innovations, classic styles, wild, wacky and mega minigolf constructions and tricky to pick a winner.

Yesterday was our finale Putt Party, where Knowle West-ers showcased our DIY Mini Golf Hole’s with one another over zoom, drawing the virtual ClubHouse meetings to a temporary pause. We can’t thank our in-house Mini Golf VIP’s @emslemsgottfried & @richard_gottfried all the way from Stockport enough. What a tricky judging time they had. They fed back beautiful comments on all the houses holes, really respected our community with words of encouragement and praise for our different skillsets and mini golf crafting skills. Comments included ‘wow, I wasn’t expecting that!’ & ‘you had it all!’ 949 Mini Golf Holes 🕳 visited. We cannot wait for you to visit us in Knowle West (when restrictions allow). #superstars #mr&mrs #minigolfchamps #thankyousomuch #diygolfcourse #communityfirst

After everyone had demonstrated their crazy golf layout and talked through the ideas behind it we entered into deliberation before declaring the Alford family the winners of the Mini Golf Artists Award 2020 for their excellent Crocodile hole.

You can see the winning design in the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club Facebook Group and Instagram.

The multi-level layout had moving parts to open the croc's mouth, a ramp, tunnel, a playable tee-off point and a nice green.

Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club in Bristol

Information about the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club in Knowle West, Bristol.

The Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club has been created in Knowle West, Bristol.

A new home-based minigolf club has been created ahead of the building of a brand new minigolf course in Bristol.

Many thanks to our friend, minigolf rival and Midlands Minigolf Club team-mate Kevin Moseley for letting us know about the new minigolf club and course near him in Bristol.

The Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club has been set-up by artist Megan Clark-Bagnall to introduce fun and creativity during lockdown.

Members of the online Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club are putting together ideas and obstacles in the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club's Facebook Group. The new minigolf course will be opening at Filwood Community Centre later in the year.

It's brilliant to see another example of competitive isolation during the pandemic. We've loved seeing all of the different Putt At Home activities taking place around the world while people haven't been able to get out to play.

We're looking forward to following the progress of the club and playing the course on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour.

Check out the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club's Facebook Group and the Filwood Community Centre website for more information.

New minigolf and tenpin bowling centre in Bristol

There are plans for a new minigolf and tenpin bowling centre in Bristol's harbourside.

Bristol could soon be home to a new indoor minigolf venue

Bristol could soon be home to a new indoor minigolf and tenpin bowling centre with a venue proposed for the harbourside area.

If plans are submitted and approved the venue will become home to ten tenpin bowling lanes and three minigolf courses.

It'll be the latest in a number of venues combining bowling and minigolf and tapping into the rise in competitive socialising.

Credit Cruncher

Having a look through our photo archives earlier a snap from our trip to Bristol back in 2011 caught my eye - it was of the (now closed) Credit Cruncher on Gloucester Road. What a Pac-Man parody!

I love bootlegs and parodies and it's always fun seeing 'Pac-Man' stuff

Minigolfing in Bath, Wookey Hole, Cheddar and Brean (but not Bristol)

Visiting another thirteen courses on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour!

Between the 10th and 13th of November 2012 Emily and I were in Somerset and while there managed to find and play a few new courses as part of our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour.

When heading off on a trip to anywhere we’ll generally have an idea of where there may be a course to visit and play and we’d noted a few to have a look at while visiting Bath, Cheddar and Brean. On our trip we visited a total of 13 courses (five of which we’d been to previously) and managed to play four of them. This was a bonus as it is ‘out of season’ at the moment.

We have now visited a total of 520 Miniature Golf courses on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour since September 2006! Of these 520 we’ve been able to play 312 of them.

Minigolf Courses visited and revisited on our recent trip:
• #309 Bath (Victoria Park) – Victoria Falls Adventure Golf

• #310 Wookey Hole – Pirate Island Adventure Golf

• #311 Cheddar – Cheddar Crazy Golf

• Bath - (Combe Grove Manor, Brassknocker Hill, Monkton Combe) - Minigolf - Could not find it!

• #312 Brean (Leisure Dome Amusement Arcade) – Indoor Crazy Golf

Revisit (#260) Weston-Super-Mare (Fella's) - Crazy Golf

The courses we managed to play were all great in their own way. Victoria Falls Adventure Golf in Bath was a nicely laid out 18-hole course with some tricky obstacles and it was great to see it so busy on a not so nice November afternoon! The Wookey Hole Pirate Island Adventure Golf was a good little 9-hole course with some great theming and obstacles. The Cheddar Crazy Golf was a brilliant and unique 18-hole layout that was great fun to play. It’s a course I’d very happily play over and over again. Finding the indoor Crazy Golf at Brean’s Leisure Dome Amusement Arcade was a bonus and the course looked great and was fun to play. Some of the holes were very tough and nigh on impossible to score a hole-in-one on. As well as the large Congo Adventure Golf course in Brean there is also a tiny 9-hole Pirate Adventure Golf/Crazy Golf course on South Road.

While in Bath we had a look for the Minigolf course at the Combe Grove Manor on Brassknocker Hill, but after a drive around the grounds we couldn't see it. We did see a Golf Driving Range and a bit of a Putting green/course near one of the car parks, but not the Minigolf layout as can be viewed online.

Three of the course revisits we made were in Weston-Super-Mare where we found the Putting course at the Miniature Railway on the Beach Lawns to have closed down. This is to make way for a new Adventure Golf course that is planned for the site.

The new Pirate Bay Adventure Golf at Bristol Golf Centre was too tricky for us to find, it wasn’t signposted and after driving (queuing) around through the rush hour traffic we gave up our search and headed back to Luton. We will be back to give the new course a play in the future though.

Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf's new blog

I recently noticed that Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf has recently created a blog. You can check it out at "Jungle Rumble THE BLOG"

There are two Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf sites, each containing two 18-hole indoor miniature golf courses. One is in Bristol at the Cabot Circus Shopping Centre. When Emily and I visited the courses back in February 2010 they became the 161st and 162nd played on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour. We were in Bristol preparing for the British Minigolf Association's BMGA English Open tournament that was taking place at Jungle Rumble.

The other Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf is at the Liverpool ONE Shopping Centre in Liverpool. The courses at this site were the 212th and 213th played on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour in March 2011. Once again we were visiting the courses ahead of a BMGA Tour event. This time it was the BMGA National Open tournament.

For details of other minigolf blogs (and links to other websites of interest) please check out the 'links' on the right hand side of the Ham & Egger Files web page.

The 'Buttons Committee' - First/Impromptu Meeting at Reading Services on the M4!

Following a great weekend in Bristol I was heading back up the M4 when, feeling tired, I decided to stop off at Reading Services for a bottle of Mountain Dew, when I was spotted by Oliver Florence and Richard Skeggs, who had stopped off on their way home for a break too!

This became the First/Impromptu Meeting of the 'Buttons Committee', as we headed to the arcades at the Service Station!

Our 'haul' included a Bouncy Ball (Oliver) and a Minigolf Player Lookalike Action Figure from the £2 a go play til you win prize every time 'Grabber' (Richard G).

Great fun!

Harry's Buttons in Bristol and a Closed-Down Quasar!

Following the Laser Quest Challenge in Bristol we headed over the road to Harry's Amusements, where the neon sign outside said there was a Quasar Laser Tag inside!

However when we enquired, 'Harry' told us that the Quasar there closed four years ago!

Instead we played some old retro arcade machines, had an Air Hockey tournament and played a Table Football competition - this resulted in a ten-nil victory to the Richard-Richard/Gottfried-Skeggs Combination!

In 'Harry's Air Hockey Tournament' Oliver beat Richard G 7-3, Richard S beat Marc 7-2 and in the Grand Final Richard S beat Oliver 7-2 (or possibly 7-3).

Gluten Free in Bristol - Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Carluccio's

As a Coeliac, finding places to eat out in a new town that can cater for Coeliacs by offering Gluten Free and Wheat Free options can be a nightmare.

Therefore I was very happy indeed in finding excellent service in both the Gourmet Burger Kitchen at Cabot Circus, and Carluccio's while I was in Bristol for the BMGA Rumble in the Jungle Minigolf Tournament last weekend.

I had a fantastic meal at the GBK at Cabot Circus in Bristol on Saturday night. The member of staff I spoke to there was brilliant and very knowledgeable. She made sure that my food was cooked and prepared to minimise the risk of cross-contamination. It was excellent to be able to have a main meal and a side order (the Grilled Halloumi Bites were very tasty).

At Carluccio's on Sunday afternoon I was able to have a large choice of meals and opted for the Rib Eye steak which was very nice indeed.

Both meals out were hassle-free - a big change to many experiences of eating out as a Coeliac - and both added to the enjoyment of a great weekend away in Bristol :-)

I recommend both GBK and Carluccio's - not just to Coeliacs - but to 'normal' people too ;-) I hope I am able to eat at other branches of both in the future too.

Rock Paper Scissors Tournament at The Crown in Bristol

While at the Geoffrey Oi!cott gig on Saturday night we held an impromptu Minigolfers Rock Paper Scissors Tournament (following on from the GoRPS Rock Paper Scissors Championships in Birmingham in January)

Irchester's Marc 'The Roller' Bazeley had triumphed at the Star City event, with an impressive undefeated streak of 4 wins in a row, in the 'best-of-3-throws-winner-stays-on' format event. But this time out he lost to a slightly confused Alan Norman, who was DQ'd in his next match for using an illegal RPS throw!?

Full Results from the GoRPS Rock Paper Scissors Championships in Bristol
Match 1 - Marc Bazeley beat Richard Gottfried
Match 2 - Marc Bazeley lost to Alan Norman
Match 3 - Alan Norman was disqualified for using an illegal throw of 'Sausage' in his match versus Brad Shepherd
Match 4 - Brad Shepherd beat Chris 'Lobster Scrumpy' Jones in the final

No photos from the matches exist, although there is a great video of Alan Norman's dancing following the Punk Gig!

Punk Gig - Geoffrey Oi!cott at The Crown in Bristol

While in Bristol on Saturday night I went to my first-ever Punk Gig (as you do!?) as the 'Cricket Punk' band Geoffrey Oi!cott were playing at The Crown Pub. I'd been tipped off about the gig by my fellow BMGA Tour member Brad Shepherd - himself a member of Punk Rock Band Monkish.

An excellent night and a band I'd definitely recommend seeing!

Watch and listen to the brilliant song Glory Glory Garry Thompson by Geoffrey Oi!Cott.

Luton Minigolfer Richard Gottfried finished in 12th place in a 28 player field in the British Minigolf Association’s second tournament of the season at the BMGA Rumble in the Jungle held at the 36-hole Jungle Rumble Indoor Adventure Golf at Bristol’s Cabot Circus on Sunday 12th February.

The tournament was played over three 18-hole rounds and Oxford’s Michael Smith picked up his second consecutive win of the season with a 54-hole score of 92(-16). Richard had a three-round total of 103(-5) which included scores of 36(par), 34(-2) and 33(-3). All three rounds were new personal bests for him on the course.

Minigolf Report - Scrap Iron Cup 5 - Bristol - Jungle Rumble

Fifth Scrap Iron Cup Minigolf Competition - Results and Report

On Saturday 12th February four members of the Midlands Minigolf Club (MMGC) and a player from the Green Mini Golf Club took part in the Johnson's Scrap Iron Cup competition played at the 36-hole Jungle Rumble Indoor Adventure Golf course at Cabot Circus in Bristol. The tournament used a two-round mixed strokeplay and matchplay format.

With Richard Gottfried, Paul Johnson and Owen Johnson paying members of the Green Mini Golf Club, as well as being long-time members of the Midlands Minigolf Club, an offer to compete for the Scrap Iron Cup was extended to Seth 'Clockwork Orange' Thomas (who was part-way through a practice round with Richard ahead of the following day's BMGA Rumble in the Jungle tournament). Seth accepted his 'Day-Pass' to the MMGC.

As at the previous staging of the Scrap Iron Cup, last month in Birmingham, five players lined-up, with the field including:

- 'Squire' Richard Gottfried
- Paul 'The Overtaker' Johnson
- Owen 'Jackpot' Johnson
- Peter 'The Crazy Aced Assassin' Jones
- Seth 'Clockwork Orange' Thomas

The top ranked player after round one was up and coming GMGC player Seth Thomas, who scored the only under-par round with a good 17(-1).

Much like the Star City hosted 4th Scrap Iron Cup in Birmingham, a play-off was again needed to decide who would join Seth as the other finalist after Paul Johnson and Richard Gottfried had both tied on 18(par). A sudden-death play-off followed and was won at the third extra-hole by Gottfried. The play off saw Paul and Richard score 2-2, 1-1 and x-2.

In the 9-hole Matchplay Match final-round Seth Thomas won 1-up in a very close match that saw both players trade Aces in the early holes, and Thomas win the match and the Johnson's Scrap Iron Cup at the 18th hole (the 9th of the match).

The Scrap Iron Cup 'originally' came 'packaged' in a disposable Iceland carrier bag. Somewhere between Scrap Iron Cup competitions 3 and 4 this bag was lost, so ahead of the Bristol event an Iceland Bag For Life was bought to house the prestigious trophy!

The Scrap Iron Cup Minigolf Championship will be contested again at The Green Indoor Mini Golf in February and the Jungle Rumble Course in Liverpool in March.
