20 minigolf newsletters in 2020

While we haven't been out visiting and playing minigolf courses since mid-March we have been writing a lot about the game.

We've just sent out our 20th newsletter of the year.

Pandemic stops putting

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic we were closing in on visiting the final 40 courses of the original 600 we set out to play in 2006. We're also very close to hitting 1,000 course visits overall.

Before the lockdown hit and our out-of-home putting was paused we'd visited 948 courses since September 2006.

20 courses in 20 days in 2020

We had a strong start to the year and visited 20 courses in the first 20 days of 2020.

Our travels took us to miniature golf venues in Oxford, Birmingham, Manchester, Northwich, Doncaster and Castleford.

A revisit

We went to Wythenshawe Park just over the border in Manchester for our daily outdoor exercise last Sunday and revisited the Crazy Golf we first played in 2009. While there we also visited the currently closed Pitch & Putt Miniature Golf course. That became course visit 949 and the first new course we've been to since the pandemic hit.

enewsletter minigolf round-up

Even though winter has well and truly hit us here in Stockport we've still been busy getting out and about visiting and playing miniature golf courses.

Last weekend we went to Warrington for the first time and played the funfair and circus themed indoor adventure golf course at the Superbowl tenpin bowling fun centre. That was the 899th course we've been to in the British Isles!

Overall we've now visited 938 courses including the 39 overseas courses.

When you factor in the courses in the UK and nine overseas countries that Christopher Gottfried has been to on his own branch of the Crazy World of Minigolf Tour we've visited 961 courses overall.

When our travels began back in September 2006 there were around 600 courses in the UK. That number has grown massively in the last eight years and there are now 1,200 or so places to play minigolf. When we first set out to visit all the courses in the country there were only two indoor courses. They have been joined by around 100 other indoor minigolf venues so there are a lot of places you can play minigolf year round.

Check out our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour list of courses for links to the courses we've been to.

Wasp attack closes minigolf course in Portugal

I love hearing about news and events from around the world of minigolf and as such receive the excellent enewsletter from the team at minigolfe.pt in Portugal.

One news item in the latest update stood out in particular as an attack of wasps ("Ataque de vespas") has temporarily closed a minigolf course at the Jamor Sports Complex!

Unsurprisingly I own a minigolf ball with a wasp on it (unless it's a hornet)
Unsurprisingly I own a minigolf ball with a wasp on it (unless it's a hornet)

It used to be a bit of a running joke that the only way a British minigolfer WOULDN'T finish last in an international minigolf tournament was if an opponent got 'stang' off of a bee, wasp or hornet. It's not actually a made up story, as a poor Finnish player did have to retire from an event after getting stung, which meant a Brit was bumped up one place above the DNF on the leader-board.

Minigolf competitions in July

There are lots of opportunities to get into the competitive swing of things this month.

As we know, there's no such thing as a 'friendly' game of minigolf - everyone wants to win when they play. Well, this month there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the competitive side of the game.

Putt 'n BBQ in Prestwick
There's a Putting event taking place at Putting Plus in Prestwick this coming weekend. Players at the event on Sunday 9th July will receive free entry to the Scottish Open Putting Championship where there are a range of category prizes up for grabs! There's also a BBQ at the Parkstone Hotel on the Prom. Visit the Putting Plus Facebook page for more info.

British Open in Hastings
The 20th annual BMGA British Open championships are taking place in Hastings this weekend, with action teeing-off on the brilliant Pirate Course on Saturday 8th July. Entries to take part have closed, however spectators are always welcome to watch the action. More details on the British Minigolf Association and Hastings Adventure Golf websites.

Worthing Mini Golf Club Open at Splash Point
If you're looking to compete with the BMGA pro players you won't have to wait long though, as the next stop on the tour is the excellent Splash Point Mini Golf course at Worthing's Denton Gardens. The venue hosts the first Worthing Mini Golf Club Open on Saturday 15th July. The event has an evening tee-off time of 5pm, which will give ample time to practice during the day. Check out the event info on the Worthing Mini Golf Club Facebook page.

Holeymolies Crazy Golf
The team at Holeymolies Crazy Golf course in Skelton-in-Cleveland are organising a minigolf tournament to celebrate a successful first year for the course. More info on the format and rules can be found on the Mini Golf 1k Competition Facebook event listing.

MiniLinks Mini Open in Lytham Saint Annes

There's also a Crazy Golf course and Pennines Putting layout at MiniLinks. I had a great time playing them during my visit to the seaside town last month. I also finished in tied-13th place in the MiniLinks US Open tournament.

US Pro Minigolf Association Open
Speaking of US Opens, the USPMGA Tour's national Open tournament is taking place at the Bluegrass Miniature Golf course in Oceanport, New Jersey on the 21st and 22nd July. Our friend Pat Sheridan of the Putting Penguin website is competing. Visit the USPMGA and Bluegrass Miniature Golf websites for more details.
