Back in action at the Woodstock Petanque Club
Playing petanque at Alexandra Park in Edgeley, Stockport.
It was great to be back in action at the Woodstock Petanque Club yesterday after a bit of a break in playing the game. The Sunday session began with some coaching from two English Petanque Association coaches who led the group in some training drills and gave some pointing and shooting demonstrations.
The players practice some pointing and lobbing on the Edgeley piste |
It's always interesting receiving some top level coaching and advice and I'll certainly be putting some of the techniques into practice. I'm not sure going straight into a competitive match was the best thing to do after relearning the basics of holding and throwing a boules as my playing partner Carol and I lost 13-2 to Hilary and Dave!
My record at Woodstock Pétanque Club is now 6 wins and 5 defeats.

Latest report from the Woodstock Petanque Club
Yesterday we spent a nice afternoon playing Boules at Woodstock Pétanque Club in Edgeley, Stockport. The day was even nicer as I won all three of my games! Emily also played well on her first appearance of the new season, with two wins from three games.
In my first game I was teamed up with Richard J to take on Barbara and Joan. Richard had won the first session of the season so was undefeated in his three games so far. It was also the first-time we'd been paired together, but what a team we made, picking up the victory 13-4.
Next up was a game against Emily and Hilary J. For this contest I was paired with Andrew and in a close match we won 13-11.
My final game of the afternoon was a three-on-two game pitting me and David C against the trio of Cath, Hilary J and Jean W. The match was also the last to finish as we battled to a 13-8 victory, the scoreline not showing how close the game actually was.
My record at Woodstock Pétanque Club is now 6 wins and 4 defeats.

Start of the Pétanque season in Stockport
Boules club back in action at Alexandra Park.
Today saw the start of the 2017 Pétanque season in Stockport as 18 members of the Woodstock Pétanque Club met on the terrain at Alexandra Park in Edgeley.
It was marvellous to be back out and playing pétanque in some wonderful weather. In my match-up I was drawn to play in a triples game alongside Carol H and newcomer Hilary 2. In a very close match against David W, Jackie and Paul we picked up the win 13-10.
It was my third ever win at the club, and the second teaming up with Carol H. My record at Woodstock Pétanque Club is now 3 wins and 4 defeats, with a 'winning streak of sorts' carried over from last year.
The Woodstock Pétanque Club meets-up from 1pm on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. New players are very welcome. It costs just £10 for the annual membership, with a £1 fee per week when you play - with prizes up for grabs for results over the three games played.
Check out the Woodstock Pétanque Club website, on Twitter as well as the Pétanque in Manchester Facebook Group for more info and to check on playing dates.

Old Crazy Golf course at Alexandra Park in Edgeley, Stockport
Spotting an old and long gone Crazy Golf course at Alexandra Park in Edgeley, Stockport.
Last year Emily and I joined the Woodstock Petanque Club which plays at Alexandra Park in Edgeley, Stockport. We're also members of the Friends of Alexandra Park group which was recently set-up to maintain and improve the large park.
The Friends group has been asking members to contribute photos and memories of the park and it was great to see Allen Gleave's photo of the old Alexandra Park Crazy Golf course on the Park Friends Group Facebook Page.
We didn't know the park once had a Crazy Golf course until we spotted what looked like the outline of a minigolf layout while looking up a Google Satellite view of the park last week - it must be a very old image of the park! On Google Street View you can see the course next to the fence on Edgeley Fold in October 2008.
Speaking with members of the Friends group it appears the course had been a popular feature in the 1980's but was barely used in the 90's and was eventually removed. Comparing the Street View images from 2008 and 2015 you can see the area where the course once was is next to the MUGA (Multi Use Games Area). How times change.
It's funny to think there used to be a Crazy Golf course just a stone's throw from where we play Petanque now! If only we'd moved to Stockport, or at least visited on our tour, ten years ago!
Join the Friends of Alexandra Park to find out more about the park, its history and future activities. The latest addition to the park is a new BMX and Skate Park.

Edgeley Skatepark at Alexandra Park in Stockport
A view of the building work for the new Edgeley Skatepark at Alexandra Park.
On a lunchtime wander to Edgeley in Stockport I had a walk around Alexandra Park - home of the Woodstock Petanque Club. Apart from getting chased by a few geese down at Sykes Reservoir at the bottom of the park the biggest surprise was seeing how much work had been done on the new BMX and skatepark.
The Edgeley skatepark in Alexandra Park is being built on much of the area previously used as a Boules Terrain and Pistes for the Woodstock Petanque Club to play on.

On a related theme, we also recently found out that Alexandra Park was once home to a Crazy Golf course!

End of the Petanque season in Stockport. Or is it...
Playing Pétanque at Alexandra Park in Edgeley, Stockport.
Today's session of Pétanque in the Park with the Woodstock Pétanque Club was scheduled to be the last of the season. But with the nice weather and good turnout of players the club are looking at rolling on into the winter months, weather permitting.
In today's session I walked away with a 100% win record. Albeit having only played one match as I was otherwise engaged prior to the normal 1pm start time.
The format of play at the Woodstock Pétanque Club is great fun. It's easy to get involved and pick up the sport and well worth a go if you've never played before.
In our game - the last of three in the afternoon - I was drawn in a triples team with Jackie and Barbara to take on the pair of Paul and Andrew. In this type of situation each of the players in the team of three use two boules each, while the duo get to use three boules each.
With some very close ends played and some fine shooting and pointing from all the players we emerged as winners with a 13-8 scoreline.
The Woodstock Pétanque Club meets-up on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. New players are very welcome. It costs just £10 for the annual membership, with a £1 fee per week when you play - with prizes up for grabs for results over the three games played. The 'normal' season runs from March to October. Check out the Woodstock Pétanque Club's website for more details.
