More minigolf puzzles

What better day for a blog about some new (old) miniature golf puzzles than today - as the 29th January is National Puzzle Day!

A Putt-Putt Puzzle of a very crazy Miniature Golf course. Published by Hallmark Cards Inc. Many thanks to our friend 'Hacksaw' Jon Drexler for sending it across the pond to live in the Crazy Golf Museum

National Puzzle Day on 29 January 2015

The National Day for Jigsaw Puzzles is on Thursday 29 January 2015!

Emily is a big fan of Wasgij puzzles, while I'm always on the lookout for Mini Golf jigsaw puzzles and we've found quite a few on our travels.

Last year a long quest was ended when we managed to find an elusive Jan Van Haasteren Mini-Golf jigsaw puzzle while on a day out in Derby!

Back in March 2012 we visited Abbots Langley, Herts to attend Jigfest 2012 and we were quite tempted to enter the doubles competition at last year's British Jigsaw Puzzle Championship.

The team at Putterfingers put(t) together a great puzzle related blog post in 2013, you can read it at "5 Reasons a Crazy Golf Puzzle is Great Fun!"

While not exactly to do with jigsaws, but puzzle-related, our friend and fellow minigolfer Paul Godding runs the 7puzzle company that develops maths-related boardgames, card games and puzzles.

The British Jigsaw Puzzle Championship 2014

Second annual British Jigsaw Championship to take place in Newmarket, Suffolk.

While reading the latest issue of the Official UK Puzzle Club's newsletter my eye was taken by the news of the British Jigsaw Championship!

The tournament is taking place as part of the St Mary's Church Newmarket Jigsaw Festival on Sunday 13th of July.

Last year saw the first edition of the British Jigsaw Championship held at the festival and the winner was Emma Jenkinson of Gloucestershire.

This year will see the return of the individual tournament (with contestants tasked with completing a 1,000 piece puzzle against the clock), plus a new Pairs competition (with the duos taking on a 1,500 piece jigsaw puzzle against the clock)!

Competition puzzles are provided by British Jigsaw Championship sponsors Coiledspring Games.

The festival itself runs from Saturday 12th until Thursday 17th July and is open from 10am to 4pm daily, with entry priced at £2 for adults (children free), including a tea/coffee. Other light refreshments will be available.

Finding the Jan Van Haasteren Crazy Golf Jumbo Jigsaw Puzzle in Derby

A long quest to find an elusive Mini-Golf jigsaw puzzle is over!

After much searching on our travels around the UK, Emily and I finally found a missing piece of our Crazy Golf collection as we spotted the Jan Van Haasteren Crazy Golf jigsaw puzzle by Jumbo in Derby!

The Jumbo Crazy Golf jigsaw puzzle by Jan Van Haasteren comes in 1500 and 3000 piece sets

Derby's indoor market has a set of stalls - called Poynton's - consisting of a newsagent, a sweetshop and a treasure trove of jigsaw puzzles!

Emily is a big fan of Wasgij puzzles and together we've been hunting for the Jan Van Haasteren Jumbo 'Mini Golf' jigsaw since we spotted it in a temporary Christmas shop in Ipswich a couple of years ago (and we've rued the decision to not buy it then as it was at the start of a bout of Christmas shopping and we never made it back to the shop).

Faced with a choice of the 3000 or 1500 piece puzzles we opted for the 1500 piece one as we'd need to buy a bigger dining table for the 3000 piece one to fit on!

The puzzle has four titles - Crazy Golf, Midgetgolf, Mini-Golf and Minigolf - and depicts a very crazy miniature golf course! Emily and I might have visited over 550 courses on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour, but we've never seen one as wild and crazy as the one conjured up from Jan Van Haasteren's imagination!

On another recent road-trip we visited the village of Easingwold and spotted The Yorkshire Jigsaw Store there. It's another shop that is worth a look, and while the Jan Van Haasteren Minigolf jigsaw puzzle wasn't in stock, they did say they could've ordered it in for us.

Back in October 2013 the team at Putterfingers put together a great blog post entitled "5 Reasons a Crazy Golf Puzzle is Great Fun!".

Jigfest 2012!

Action from the 2012 Jigsaw Puzzle Extravaganza in Abbots Langley.

On Saturday Emily and I headed to Abbots Langley in Hertfordshire to attend Jigfest 2012!

We had spotted the event in a news story in the Watford Observer and decided to check it out. The admission was £1 and included a cup of tea – I required very little persuading with an offer of free tea!

Even though Emily is a card carrying member (Bronze level) of The Official UK Puzzle Club we had never been to a ‘Jigfest’ before. Handily the organisers had information on each of the tables with details of what to do.

The 'rules' of Jigfest!

I enjoyed my free cup of tea and the chance to ‘play’ a Where’s Wally? jigsaw puzzle. I managed to find Wally, who had been very sneakily hidden. I couldn’t find Wizard Whitebeard though.

We didn't miss looking in this corner!!

Me and my cup of tea

The annual Jigfest extravaganza is held to raise funds for the upkeep of the Abbots Langley Community Centre. Jigfest is sponsored by M.K. Ginder & Sons Funeral Directors.

It was also nice to have a wander around Abbots Langley in the lovely sunny weather. Even though we live just down the road in Luton we've never been there before.
