The Blackpool Pleasure Beach Adventure Golf course

A revisit to the Adventure Golf course at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Adventure Golf at Blackpool Pleasure Beach

On Monday 20th May I was in Blackpool and swung by the Adventure Golf course at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Going to the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Adventure Golf course always bring a smile to my face, as it was the scene of my victory in the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Open tournament in 2009.

As it was just before the season got underway the course wasn't open.

We first visited the course in 2008 when we helped to launch the course and competed in the inaugural Blackpool Pleasure Beach Open tournament. The course was number 44 on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour.

A revisit to the Adventure Golf course at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Adventure Golf

We were lucky enough to visit Blackpool twice in August last year and that meant we were able to revisit a number of miniature golf courses.

It's was nice to see the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Adventure Golf course was still proving to be a popular attraction. Although it's still annoying that my name has never been up on the hut as I've got the course record - a 24 - not this Peter McGillivray character and his round of 25.

My first round in the 2009 Blackpool Pleasure Beach Open competition was a 24. Peter McGillivray's name and round of 25 shots has been up on the board since 2016

There used to be another miniature golf course inside the Pleasure Beach - an Alpine themed one. That was the 46th course played on our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour.

The Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre in Stockport

We recently became members of the Plaza Film Club at the Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre in Stockport.

A view of the Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre in Stockport taken from the car park of the Merseyway Shopping Centre
The wonderful Art Deco building really stands out - especially when there's a show on

Just before we fully moved up to Cheadle Hulme I popped into Stockport for the first time and one of the first buildings I saw was the Plaza. Emily and I are big fans of Art Deco architecture and The Plaza is a fine example.

The Plaza Film Club membership costs just £5 per year and entitles you to discounted entry to most films and satellite broadcasts - and there's a great programme of events to choose from.

On Halloween night we made our first trip to watch a film there - the original Night of the Living Dead - and it was a tremendous experience. We can't wait to go back. Watching a movie at the Plaza is like nothing else. Such marvellous fun.

Visit the Plaza's website to find out more about the Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre, its history and what's on.

Southport Golf Links - England's first Municipal Links Golf course

A visit to England's first Municipal Links Golf course - Southport Golf Links.

As a miniature golf historian I was quite interested to walk passed Southport Municipal Golf course on our recent trip to the seaside town. Opened in 1912, the course is England's oldest municipal links course.

The Art Deco clubhouse looked marvellous

A nice touch on the outside of Southport Golf Links

On our Crazy World of Minigolf Tour we've visited and played a number of historic courses including:

  • The world's first Miniature Golf course - The Himalayas at St Andrews which opened in 1867.
  • England's first Crazy Golf course on South Parade in Skegness was opened in 1926. There's still a course on the site today.
  • England's first Pitch & Putt course purpose built for use by members of the public opened on Southsea seafront in 1914.

Christmas by easyJet - Luton's Christmas Lights Switch On

Luton's festive lights switched on by actor Leslie Grantham and sponsored by easyJet.

Luton Christmas Lights
Not the whole of Luton's Christmas Lights for 2013

On Saturday 7th December the 2013 Christmas Lights Switch On took place in Luton.

The guest celebrity switcher-onner at this year's Lighting Up Luton event was Leslie 'Dirty Den' Grantham, who is currently in the pantomime Dick Whittington 'over the border' at the Grove Theatre in Dunstable.

Earlier this year there had been talks of the town having no Christmas lights in 2013 due to the budget cuts affecting Luton Borough Council. However, Luton-based easyJet, and a number of other sponsors involved in the Love Luton campaign, stepped in to save them.

Here's a video of the practice countdown, led by Leslie Grantham.

As well as the stars of the Dick Whittington, the characters from the Luton Library Theatre panto of Beauty and the Beast were in attendance at the event at Luton Town Hall*, along with the team from Heart Four Counties radio.

A nice touch were the 'Christmas by easyJet' hats. Very cheesy, but good fun.

Personally I would've liked it if ALL of the lights had been lit up in easyJet's distinctive orange branding!
