Luton Minigolfers Richard and Emily Gottfried received their fifth Great Britain caps as they played in the third World Minigolf Sport Federation tournament held in the UK. Emily became a two-time WMF World Adventure Golf Masters Women’s Champion at the event defeating defending champion Ruth Burke in a sudden-death play-off at the third extra-hole after both players had tied after six rounds.

Emily Gottfried - 2013 WMF Women's World Adventure Golf Masters Champion

The 2013 WMF World Adventure Golf Masters took place at the 18-hole Pirate-themed Adventure Golf course in Hastings, East Sussex on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June and saw a 37 player individual tournament take place along with a seven-team competition.

Great Britain 3 from l-r John Moore (c), Emily Gottfried, Richard Gottfried, Craig Patterson

Emily said “I'm unbelievably happy to win my second World Adventure Golf Master Women’s Title. It was a close-fought battle, with Ruth and I trading the lead between each of the six rounds, and then finally finishing on the same score. The play-off was tense so to win it with an ace on the third-hole was an exciting way to secure the title!"

As part of the Great Britain 3 Team Richard and Emily teamed with Newcastle’s John Moore and Brighton’s Craig Patterson as they took on Germany, Sweden, three other Great Britain teams and a WMF Allstar team comprised of players from Germany and Finland. The GB3 team made the cut for the final round and finished in fifth place overall, defeating the much fancied GB2 team in the contest. Germany won the event, with GB1 runners-up and Sweden in third place.

In the two-day individual competition played over seven-rounds Richard finished in 20th place scoring rounds of 36, 33, 33, 35, 33, 33 and 30 for a total of 233(-19). In the male category competition he finished in tied 12th place of 22 players.

Richard said “It’s always special playing for the national team and I was pleased to put in a good performance for our team. I was very pleased to shoot a low of 29 in the team final and to finish 19-under par in the individual contest was a good result. Well done to Emily on her women’s title win too, she did very well to recompose herself after a fraught final round to secure the win through the play-off.”

Sunday 16th June also saw the second BMGA British Adventure Golf Open competition take place. The three-round tournament saw Richard finish in 10th place with Emily in 19th in the 23-player field. The result sees Richard move up one place in the BMGA Tour Strokeplay Order of Merit Rankings to 7th of 125 players, with Emily in 44th position. In the BMGA Season Only Rankings for 2013 Richard is in 9th place of 56 players and Emily is in 15th spot.

The Other Olympics

A great new book about international multi-sports competitions!

I’ve recently finished reading the new book ‘The Other Olympics’ by Matt Roebuck and must say what a great read it is.

During 2011 the author, Matt Roebuck, travelled around the world visiting thirteen international multi-sports games (the ‘Other Olympics’) and took in events such the Games of the Small States of Europe, the World Transplant Games, the Island Games, the European Masters Games, World Skills 2011 and the Pan-Armenian Games!

It was great to read about people's motivations for getting involved in different sports and multi-sport events as athletes, organisers and officials.

Whether you are involved in sport as an athlete, official, coach, media, organiser, committee member, volunteer or in any other capacity I think The Other Olympics is well worth a read.

I heard about the book after it was mentioned in a tweet by the TINTYPE Gallery when the author managed to score a hole-in-one on the very tricky (and crazy) ‘window hole’ at the Crazee Golf exhibition in London.

As someone who plays a lot of Minigolf (and a fair few other sports and games) and helps to organise and promote events on the British Minigolf Association Tour and within the World Minigolf Sport Federation I found the book interesting on a number of levels. Whether sports, associations, multi-sport events are big, small or somewhere in-between they have to deal with similar problems and issues, while there are also great opportunities to get people involved in sports.

The Other Olympics website has a comprehensive listing section of ‘Other Olympics’ from 2011, this year and for 2013.

While not featuring in the book (as it took place this year rather than last) it was great to see the World Alternative Games does appear on the Other Olympics website. I had a great time running the WFJF Finger Jousting Championships at the event and also came away as one-half of the World Egg Throwing Champion Team at the event! An excellent event in a great town (the smallest in the UK!).

This year I was also involved in bringing the sport of Minigolf to its first multi-sports games in the UK when it was included in the 2012 Oswestry Games in Shropshire. The Oswestry Games (aka The Oslympics) consisted of over 30 sports and 50 sports & cultural events over a ten-day festival of sport. It was a mammoth undertaking from the team at Oswestry Sports Council, but well worth it. You can check out the report from the British Minigolf Association activities at the Oswestry Games here.

Minigolf was also a part of the Hans Christian Andersen City Games in Denmark in July this year and back in 1989 the sport (Bahn Golf) was a demonstration event in the IWGA World Games in Karlsruhe, Germany. The World Minigolf Sport Federation (WMF) is also hoping to have Minigolf included in other multi-sport events in the future.

Please have a look on the links below for more about The Other Olympics and details of how you can buy a copy of The Other Olympics book.

Minigolf Report - Gottfried’s play in the 2012 WMF World Adventure Golf Masters International Championship in Hastings

Richard & Emily Gottfried compete in individual and team international Adventure Golf championships.

Luton Minigolfers and Great Britain Internationals Richard and Emily Gottfried received their fourth caps for GB as they competed in the second World Minigolf Sport Federation tournament played in the UK. The WMF World Adventure Golf Masters took place at the 18-hole Pirate-themed Adventure Golf course in Hastings, East Sussex on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th May.

The WMF World Adventure Golf Masters saw a 20-player individual tournament take place along with a five-team competition.

As part of the Great Britain B Team Richard and Emily teamed with Brad Shepherd and Ruth Burke as they took on Germany, two other Great Britain teams and a WMF Allstar team comprised of players from Germany, Kosovo, the Republic of Ireland and the USA.

In the battle for the bronze medal the WMF Allstars won the seven-round contest by thirteen shots with a total of 686, with Great Britain B on 699. The overall champions were Germany who retained their title with a five-shot victory over the Great Britain A Team.

In the two-day individual competition Richard finished 14th, scoring rounds of 32, 34, 38, 34, 36, 32 and 34 to finish on a twelve under par total of 240 across the seven-rounds.

Emily scored rounds of 38, 33, 36, 39, 34, 35 and 31 to finish on 246(-6) and 17th place in the overall tournament. Emily was unable to retain her WMF World Adventure Golf Masters Women’s title, losing to Ruth Burke by ten shots.

Germany’s Martin Stoeckle retained his title winning the overall tournament with a score of 191(-61). Great Britain players Michael Smith and James Rutherford were in second and third place.

Richard said “It’s always an honour to represent Great Britain and the World Adventure Golf Masters is a great event. Our team had a real battle with the Allstar team in the fight for the Bronze and it was a shame we couldn’t defeat them. Apart from my rounds of 36 and 38 I was happy with my scoring, but will need to hit a few more Aces in next month’s BMGA British Minigolf Championships which will be on the same course.”

Emily said “Obviously I am sorry not to retain my title and although I had a couple of poor rounds I also scored a Personal Best round of 31 on the course. I lost out by 10 shots so I know I need to work on this and win the Women’s World Adventure Golf Title back next year.”

Saturday 19th May also saw the first-ever BMGA British Adventure Golf Open competition take place. The three-round tournament was won by Michael Smith with a score of 89(-19). Richard finished the contest in 9th place in the fourteen-player field following rounds of 36, 32 and 34 for a 102(-6) total.
