On our travels around the UK we're always on the look out for new places to eat out, and for (often elusive) Gluten Free Fish & Chip Shops!

- Deep Blue - Woburn Sands, Bucks

- The Big Fish - Hockley Heath, Solihull - Update: September 2012 - Now called Nelson's and only serves GF on Wednesday's
- Merivale Tea Rooms - Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

On our trip to Southwold a couple of years ago we also noticed that once a month they serve Gluten Free Fish & Chips in the Restuarant on the Pier.
Churchills Chippy in Southend-on-Sea offer Gluten Free Fish & Chips, but on our visit we found out that while the batter mix is made to be GF, the food is still cooked in the same oil and fryer as Gluten containing foods.
On a trip to South Shields Emily spotted that Colmans Fish & Chips Shop does Gluten Free options every last Saturday of the month.
A recent tweet from Deep Blue Restaurants (a chain of Fish & Chip shops - of which Woburn Sands is one) told me that they have eight restaurants now serving Gluten Free. Great news.
I've heard via Facebook that Chamberlain's Quality Fish & Chips in Birmingham can do Gluten Free Fish & Chips every day apart from between 5.30pm and 8.30pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. I noticed that they sell Estrella Damm Duara beer there too!
I contribute reviews of any places that I find offering Gluten Free options/catering for Coeliacs to the Travel Gluten Free and Gluugle websites. I also tweet any that I find.

Outside the areas you seem to normally travel but the best gluten free fish and chips I've found are those at Westfield Fisheries in Yeadon, Leeds.
ReplyDeleteHello Ian.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the Gluten Free Fish & Chips tip. I've not been to Leeds (yet), but i'll check it out if and when I go there.
Cheers,
Richard
Via the Celia Gluten Free Lager website I found out that Olley's Fish & Chip restaurant in South London does Gluten Free options every Tuesday. They also stock Celia Lager. I'll have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteAs I am always on the lookout for new places to eat out at Gluten Free I was very pleased to hear from the Beds & Mid Herts Coeliac Group that there are some new Fish & Chip shops offering Gluten Free options! They are:
ReplyDelete- Godfrey's on Harpenden High Street - offering Gluten Free every Monday from the 18th February
- Mario's Fish & Chip Shop in Bedford - offering Gluten Free every Tuesday
- Fosters Fish and Chips in Alderley Edge, Cheshire - offering Gluten Free every Sunday
- Fish and Chips, at London Road, Enfield - offering Gluten Free every Monday
If you know of any Fish & Chip shops offering Gluten Free food suitable for Coeliacs do let me know via the comments on this blog post.
I've also heard via Twitter that the Orange Tree Inn at Baldock can do Gluten Free Fish & Chips.
ReplyDeleteOn Monday evening Emily and I headed over to Godfrey's Fish & Chips in Harpenden, Hertfordshire as they offer Gluten Free Fish and Chips every Monday night. The portion of large cod and regular chips were both a very good size and tasted great. The Gluten Free options are prepared and cooked separately to avoid cross-contamination. It's also great that Godfrey's have non-brewed condiment available for those Coeliacs looking to avoid malt vinegar too.
ReplyDeleteThere are plans for the fish & chip shop to also open a restaurant area in the near future.
Well worth a visit to this fairly new chippy if you're in the area (or passing through). We'll be back.

Check out the National Federation of Fish Friers website for details of Gluten Free Fish & Chip Shops in the UK!
ReplyDeleteWhile in East Anglia in August 2013 we found two places offering gluten free food, both of which served Fish & Chips on the menu.
ReplyDeleteI didn't try the Fish & Chips at either, but my reviews of The Brook Inn at Washbrook, near Ipswich, and The Singing Kettle in Walton on the Naze, Essex can be read on the Travel Gluten Free website.
Just got back from a holiday in Norfolk. Had gluten free fish & chips from the three cottages in north walsham, they were amazing!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant :-)
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for your tip about The Three Cottages Fish Restaurant.
Nice to know they do gluten free options. Handy for our next trip to Norfolk. Hopefully other Coeliacs hear about it too.
Cheers,
Richard
I heard through the September 2013 edition of the Coeliac UK Beds and Mid Herts group's newsletter that there is a Fish & Chip shop in Bedford, Bedfordshire that can cater for Coeliacs with Gluten Free food :-)
ReplyDeleteMario's Fish and Chip Shop can now be found at 22-24 High Street (formerly at 99 High Street). They offer gluten free fish and chips all day every Tuesday.
Brilliant news and I can't wait to give them a try.
One of the suppliers that proved incredibly popular at the 2013 Home Counties Gluten Free Food Fair in Biggleswade yesterday was The Happy Plaice mobile fish & chip van that was doing a roaring trade!
ReplyDeleteThe Happy Plaice operates in Mid Beds, the West Midlands, Bracknell Forest & Hart and the Vale of White Horse, and takes Fish & Chips to villages without a local chippy!
Find out more on The Happy Plaice website.
A friend of mine recently told me that Frackle Fryers Fish & Chip shop on Heath End Road in Flackwell Heath is now serving Gluten Free and Wheat Free fish and chips every Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteHopefully I'll one day find myself in the Flackwell Heath area of High Wycombe so I can try some out :-)

I recently heard through the Beds & Mid Herts Coeliac Group that Fishy Biz fish & chip shop in Bishops Stortford does gluten free food.
ReplyDeleteOn a recent visit to Birmingham we headed to the Atlantic Fish Bar in Kingsbury (between Birmingham and Tamworth) where we'd heard they offer gluten and wheat free options.
ReplyDeleteThe Atlantic Fish Bar specialises in gluten free on Monday's and has a very large menu catering for Coeliacs.
Our visit was on a Saturday, but the choice of food available was still very good. The welcome we received was warm too.
There is a separate counter and fryer for gluten free customers and orders and I asked what was available. I had the choice of Fish & Chips, Sausage, homemade Fish Cakes, homemade curry sauce, and mushy peas.
As I was feeling hungry I opted for battered Cod & Chips, a fish cake and a curry sauce - something I haven't had from a chippy in years!
The food and service was brilliant and I will definitely go back. Emily had a 'normal' Haddock and Chips (and I let her have some of my curry sauce as well). The meal was great. We ate-in at the counter by the window and were served on china plates. The fish bar was nicely busy during our visit with plenty of regulars popping in for their lunch.
The chips were really tasty and the gluten free batter was nice and crunchy. The curry sauce was a lovely addition - as was the provision of non-brewed condiment to splash on my lunch along with salt. This is something many fish & chip shops that provide gluten free options don't provide, instead leaving me to have just salt, as vinegar contains barley malt and is not suitable for all Coeliacs.
All in all it was a great meal and visit. I highly recommend the Atlantic Fish Bar.
My friend Lucy just let me know that Chris's Fish Bar in Tiptree, Essex does gluten free Fish & Chips. But only on Tuesday's.
ReplyDeleteLink - Chris's Fish Bar on Facebook.
Marshall's Fish & Chips in Tynemouth aka "The Fryery by the Priory" has a Gluten Free Thursday Night for Coeliacs and Gluten Intolerants.
ReplyDeleteGood news indeed.
The Fish and Chips are cooked in a separate dedicated fryer and are available between 5 and 8pm.
Interestingly the Marshall's website says the gluten free food is available on "alternate Thursdays", but doesn't clarify which Thursday it starts on - I'll take a punt on it being GF day on the first Thursday of the month, then not the next one and then GF on the next and so on and so forth...
You can get great gluten free Fish and Chips (served with pea puree and tartare sauce) at The Truscott Arms pub in Maida Vale, London.
ReplyDeleteI had them at the Gluugle launch party last night and very tasty they were.
I've heard via Twitter that the Olympic Fish Bar in Wellingborough serves gluten free options six days a week.
ReplyDeleteGreat news!
Looking on the Olympic Fish Bar's website you can see they take serving Coeliac customers very seriously as they have a dedicated fryer for cooking the gluten free battered fish and chips. They also serve GF Onion Rings!
I look forward to giving it a try sometime.

While in Harrogate yesterday we spotted that Olivers Fish & Chip Shop does gluten free options on Mondays. I popped in and asked the man if they have a separate fryer for the gluten free food and he said they do. Good news indeed.

My fellow Coeliac and gluten free blogger Kevin Gollop has put together a blog post about the Kingfisher Fish & Chip shop in Plymouth and the range of gluten free items they have on the menu.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the post at "Kingfisher Fish & Chips Gluten-free Menu". It also lists some other fish and chip shops in the Plymouth area that offer gluten free.
The Kingfisher sounds like a great chippy and its brilliant they are doing things properly with no cross-contamination. And they have GF Vinegar on offer as well (something I have found to be lacking in many chip shops I've been to, which is a real shame).
Its good to know they are keen to expand the range of gluten free items too. Looking forward to a visit to Plymouth in the future.
I recently found out that The Village Fish Bar in Gilwern, Abergavenny, Wales cooks gluten free fish & chips.
ReplyDeleteI haven't eaten there. Yet.
Visit The Village Fish bar website.

We returned to the Atlantic Fish Bar in Kingsbury, near Tamworth for some gluten free fish and chips at the weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe food and service was great - I had cod and chips, with Emily having the GF haddock and chips. We also shared some mushy peas and a good sized portion of battered onion rings. The onion rings were delicious and something I haven't eaten in ages!
Looking forward to returning.

I heard via a post in the Gluten free fish and chips shops in the UK Facebook group that The Wigmore Fish & Chip Restaurant and Takeaway in Luton was going to start offering gluten free options!
ReplyDeleteEach Monday from today (12 January 2015) they will be selling gluten free fish and chips.
Checking the Wigmore Fish & Chip shop's Facebook page I saw that they had let people know that the gluten free fish & chips served there will be prepared and cooked in a separate area to avoid cross-contamination. That's great to know.
I look forward to trying out the Fish & Chips there.

ReplyDeleteLooking at the gluten free section on the website it states they are suitable for coeliacs as they have measures in place to avoid cross-contamination measures. Great to know.

I was in Harpenden, Hertfordshire this evening and while walking back to the station I noticed a sign in the window of Jack's Fish and Chip Takeaway saying 'Gluten free served Monday - Thursday'.
ReplyDeleteI popped in and asked some questions about food preparation and cooking and was told that they use gluten free batter and cook the fish and chips in a separate fryer.
