Looking at the Anglesey Attractions 2009 Map & Guide I noticed another variation on the Welsh terms for Crazy Golf.
ReplyDeleteIn English it said:
"Captain Jake's Crazy Golf."
In Welsh it said:
"Golff gwallgof Capten Jake."
Looking at a blog post from 2010 when we visited Penarth we saw another two ways to say 'Miniature Golf' in Welsh.

Pitch and Putt = Golf Byr

At the World Alternative Games 2014 (Gemau Byd Arallddewisol 2014) in Britain's smallest town - Llanwrtyd Wells - we played the Portaputt Crazy Golf course that our friends the Kukielka family brought to the event.
ReplyDeleteIn the World Alternative Games event brochure the word 'Portaputt' is translated into Welsh and comes out as 'Portaputt'.
But, the introductory line in Welsh is "Beth am gêm o golff gwirion pan yn ymweld â Llanwrtyd yn 2014?" which translates as "How about a game of crazy golf when visiting Llanwrtyd Wells in 2014?", so 'Crazy Golf' is also 'golff gwirion'. Another new way to say Crazy Golf in Welsh! Brilliant.

Loving it!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking with the team at Cwmbran-based Crazy Golf business Portaputt I've got some more info on English to Welsh translations of 'Minigolf'.
ReplyDelete"Adventure Golf" is "Golff Anturus".
The best translation for "Crazy Golf" is "Golff Gwyllt". The word "gwirion" means "stupid"!
The Welsh word for "putt" is "put".
Check out the Portaputt website and Twitter feed for more information on the Portaputt Crazy Golf course / Cwrs Golff Gwyllt and how you can hire it for events.
At the Great Orme Family Golf Centre in Llandudno the sign for the course says:
