98% gluten free

If something is 98% gluten free it's 100% useless to me.

The American Diner in Felixstowe is 98% gluten free
What a peculiar percentage to opt for, I wonder who their target market is?

Sadly there are very few 100% gluten free places for Coeliac diners. Cross-contamination with gluten containing food means that even 99% gluten free places are a big risk for people with Coeliac Disease.

The American Diner in Felixstowe is 98% gluten free
I've just noticed there's also a "98% GF" sticker on the door too

Thanks to Jo Tubby for the tip-off about the sign.

Another week and another KFC

Last week I spotted a branch of Kingtucky Fried Chicken in Manchester. Yesterday I found this KFC in Stockport.

Ham and Eggers wanted

I spotted this boxing job advert in Stockport town centre yesterday. The advertiser had spared the expense of doing a proper job on it.

They weren't sparing in the distribution of it either as I saw it plastered all round town.

Londi's not Londis

Our detour through Oldham on Friday meant we were travelling through some new places and when we spotted the sign at a shop on the Ripponden Road we had to stop to grab a snap. You see, the shop used to be a Londis, but is now 'Londi's'! A brilliantly simple bit of 'rebranding'.

Londi's Londis shop on the Ripponden Road in Oldham
What do you call your shop when you're no longer a Londis...

Trivia: The name Londis is a contraction of 'London District Stores'.

What a 'coincidence' the name of the new owner of the shop in Oldham was Londi eh.

It's no Singhbury's though.

Hampions of Cheadle Hulme

Better a Hampion than a Ham & Egger.

There's a lot of sports played at the Manchester Rugby Club venue in Cheadle Hulme
Not sure if Manchester Rugby Club are the champs, or if the winners are the visitors

Seeing this sign reminded me of the Championship Winning Ham at a butchers in Needham Market, Suffolk. Surely a Ham Championship is a Hampionship...

There's truth in advertising and then there's this!

Now, I'm all for truth in advertising, but I can't help but think this piece of signage at a butchers in Leeds Kirkgate Market would've benefited from a better descriptor of the product on sale.

Tripe for sale at Leeds Kirkgate Market
I suppose the 'branded' name of this product is 'Chitterlings'

The photo certainly caused a stir among followers of the Tripe Marketing Board on Twitter.

Ever since I first spotted tripe on a butcher's stall at Wigan Market in 2012 I've been following the Tripe Marketing Board with interest. Although not enough interest to have actually tried tripe. I'm fairly certain that cow's stomach is something of an acquired taste.

Visit the Tripe Marketing Board website for more information about tripe. You can also use Tripe Adviser to locate sellers of the 'delicacy'.

Taste of Carpets

I spotted this great shopfront while walking through Edgeley, Stockport yesterday evening.

The 'Taste of Carpets' shop in Edgeley, Stockport
I wonder why the shutters are down?

Not sure what's more bizarre - the Taste of Carpets, or being a Watermelon Specialist...

We've also got an Instascran shop in Stockport.

Highway to hell?

Having been to Bolton at the end of last year I must say I really like the town. But it does make me smile that the road that takes you there is the A666!

Free Jaffa Cake... if you buy a tyre

What a sales promotion!

While in Altrincham I spotted this great bit of advertising for The Tyre Warehouse.

Instascran in Stockport

We love funny signs and business names, so when we heard that there was a deli called 'Instascran' in the Heaviley bit of Stockport we had to go for a look.

Instagram is one of the few social networks I'm not on, so I don't know whether Instascran is actually on Instagram.

I'm now on Instagram. As is Instascran.

One of our favourite shop name puns is Singhbury's in Aylesbury.

Santa's Stockport Grotto

Over the past month or so I've seen some pretty dreary Christmas trees, but while having a wander down Prince's Street in Stockport I spotted what must rank as the worst looking festive thing ever!

Singhbury's Local in Aylesbury

While driving back from Abingdon to Luton Emily spotted the Singhbury's Local shop in Aylesbury!

As fans of funny signs and quirky marketing we had to stop for some photos, have a look inside and buy some snacks.

The owners - Inderjit Singh Nagpal and Manmeet Singh Bhatia - came up with the name by combining their own name with that of the 'bury' part of Aylesbury. The orange colour scheme represents that of the Sikh religion.

Clothes shopping in Hong Kong...

The advertising campaign for the 2014 Spring/Summer collection at this clothes shop in the Tsim Sha Tsui area of Kowloon, Hong Kong must've been a success as the poster is still up!

Emily spotted this brand name while on business in Kowloon - crazy!

Just recently we spotted a great window display of funny brand names from around the world at the Fleet Street Clinic in London. They don't always make the right impression when they travel to international markets!

Gluteen free?

While in Hastings for the British Minigolf Championships some of my friends and minigolf rivals kindly let me know that Trattoria Italiana on Pelham Crescent on the seafront had gluten free options.

When I went for a look I noticed a funny typo on the menu board!

Gluteen free options in Hastings
Gluteen free!

My friend Marion spotted it too. She also asked if Gluteen was some sort of sub-category in the world of Coeliac Disease?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley and so appears in a lot of food and drink. If people with Coeliac Disease ingest gluten it causes the body's immune system reacts by damaging the lining of the small intestine. For more information about Coeliac Disease visit the Coeliac UK website.

I often see Gluten spelled 'Gluton'.

Last week was Coeliac Awareness Week in the UK, while this week it's Coeliac Awareness Week in New Zealand. The whole of May is Celiac Awareness Month in the USA and Canada.

During Coeliac Awareness Week I was once again minigolfing gluten free. Last year I played in the BMGA British Minigolf Championships at Strokes Adventure Golf in Margate, Kent. Check out my blog about the experience.

Please Keep Of The Flower Beds

Having read Viz comic for many years I always thought the correct way of saying it was 'Please Keep Off Of'.

Watermelon specialists

That's quite the specialist area to open up a business in!

Logman Ltd - a business on Caledonian Road in London that specialises in watermelons

I haven't seen the shop unshuttered yet. Specialising in watermelons must be a very secretive business.

The Largsest Store in the World!

Spotting the Largsest Store in the World while in, where else, but Largs!

On our holiday in Scotland we spent the afternoon in Largs and while wandering around we spotted an interesting sign outside one of the shops.

The BIGGEST 99p or £ shop in the WORLD!

...is in Ipswich!

While in Ipswich recently we noticed the old JJB Sports shop on Carr Street in the town centre is now a shop called 'Yippee...it's 99p' and claims to be "The BIGGEST 99p or £ shop in the WORLD!"!!!

Pound shop in Ipswich

There's also a great sign in the window that states it's "THE ONLY 99p SHOP IN IPSWICH". Interesting as over the road is a '99p Stores' branch!
